‘Independent’ candidates win 53 of the top 54 positions in Dhaka University’s Hall of Parliament
Independent candidates have won the VP (Vice President), GS (General Secretary) and AGS (Associate General Secretary) posts in the 18 hall parliament elections of Dhaka University.

Analysis of the voting results showed that independent candidates won 53 of these three top posts (total 54 posts) in the university’s residential halls. Only the VP post of Jagannath Hall was won by the candidate of the Chhatra Dal nominated panel.
This time, only Chhatra Dal announced a formal panel in the hall parliament elections. The rest of the student organizations did not announce any formal panels. However, they supported many independent candidates. In most cases, Islami Chhatra Shibir and Bangladesh Democratic Chhatra Sangsad supported these independent candidates. Apart from this, the student union (Meghmallar-Main) gave a panel under the name Shaheed Jagatjyoti Brigade in Jagannath Hall.
Elections were held for 13 posts in each hall parliament. A total of 234 posts including VP, GS and AGS were up for grabs in the 18 residential halls. 1,035 candidates contested these positions. This time, only Chhatra Dal announced a formal panel for the hall parliament election. The rest of the student organizations did not announce any formal panels. However, they supported many independent candidates. In most cases, these independent candidates were supported by Islami Chhatra Shibir and Bangladesh Democratic Student Union. The DUCSU and Hall Parliament elections were held at eight centers of Dhaka University from 8 am to 4 pm last Tuesday. After that, the results of all the hall parliament elections were announced after midnight after the counting of votes. And the DUCSU results were announced yesterday, Wednesday morning.
Although most of the winning candidates in the residential halls were independent, they had the open and closed support of political student organizations. Many also believe that this support played a role in their victory.
It was learned from talking to university students that students have been angry for a long time due to the public room-guest room culture in the residential halls. That is why students preferred independent candidates in the hall parliament elections.
Ifran Hossain, a residential student at Dhaka University’s Shaheed Sergeant Zahurul Haque Hall, told Prothom Alo that for a long time, there has been a kind of anger among students against the Chhatra League’s public room, guest room and apolitical politics. That is why students have more confidence in independent candidates.
